Opened in 1956, this 13-story tower, just north of the legendary intersection of Hollywood and Vine, is one of the city's most recognizable buildings. The world's first circular office building is often, but incorrectly, said to have been made to resemble a stack of 45s under a turntable stylus (it kinda does, though). Nat "King" Cole, songwriter Johnny Mercer, and other 1950s Capitol artists populate a giant exterior mural. Look down and you'll see the sidewalk stars of Capitol's recording artists (including John Lennon). In the lobby, numerous gold albums are on display.
A few years ago they wanted to turn the building into CONDOS. Thankfully the Landmarks Commissions stepped in and the idea was permanently scrapped. CONDOS?
What is WRONG with people?
End of chat.
They'd make nice apartments...

LOVE the Capitol Records building, it's so iconic! When I was out in L.A recently, just seeing it gave me this awesome feeling. As far as NYC though, the Chrysler building isn't as cool as classic Empire State Building. I'm preferential since I can see it from all over my town lol. The twin towers were my favorite though...
ReplyDeletePeople are idiots. End of comment.
ReplyDeleteI luuurrve the Chrysler building! And I loved the first season of Project Runway when Jay made a dress inspired by the Chrysler building. Yes, I have no life.
ReplyDeleteWhy don't I remember that building? Was I always looking down when I lived there? Hmmm
ReplyDeleteMaybe they thought condos was a "Capitol" idea. Not.
ReplyDeleteThe building is an icon for God's sake. Thank goodness someone with half a brain and an ounce of taste stepped in.
ReplyDeletedid you say condoms? CONDOMS??
ReplyDeleteoh wait. never mind.
If they did make it a condo it would be an awesome place to live. The pizza guy would always know where to deliver
ReplyDeleteAt least Lost Angeles HAS a Landmarks Commission. Here in Houston, it's all fair game; if you can buy it, you can do whatever you want with it. Oh, and there's no zoning here, either. Put up whatever you want wherever you want to put it. I've always liked the Stack-o-Records building, though.
ReplyDeleteThe light on top of the tower blinks "hollywood" in morse code.

Maybe the people were appeased by a similarly shaped building at Sunset and the 405 which used to be a Holiday Inn (I think) and is now condos (I think).
