Julie & Julia

I was going to review this movie but Women in Hollywood did a good job and I'll just link it for you. I also agreed with the comments that I wish the movie had been UNIQUELY about Julia Child. I love Amy Adams but feel she was woefully miscast. To act that wimpy across a strong figure like Julia Child is going to make a lopsided film. We needed to see someone who had a little, a LITTLE, breath of life. I kept waiting for Meryl to come back on screen. I would have liked more Stanley Tucci and the brilliant Jane Lynch too. But do people call me and ask my opinion?

And FINALLY Americans will learn how to say Bon Appetit correctly. It's not 'appeteete.' The final T is not pronounced. It's pronounced Bon Appetee. And Paris looks, as usual. GORGEOUS. God, Los Angeles is a hole.

Eat a big meal before you go. Really. Not after. Before. Trust me on this.

  1. I can't wait to see it.

My son and I were in the car listening to Fresh Air and Terri Gross' last interview with Julia Child. "What is with that woman's voice?!" he wondered.

  2. I read the book when it came out and I thought it was just OK.
I'll go see the movie just to see Paris again! And Meryl Streep of course.
Another blogger I read had the same opinion about Meryl Streep and Amy Adams - that she couldn't wait for Meryl to come back on screen.

  3. I read the book, and it was great! I'm disappointed that Amy Adams is getting such a bad rap over the movie. I've been a huge fan of hers since "Junebug." I imagine it's a real challenge to hold your own with Meryl Streep, though!

  4. I really have to stop living in a bubble. I've never even heard of this movie until just now.

  6. I just HAVE to get all sappy here and say that I have always had a soft spot in my heart for Julia--my mother had her cook books, and we would watch her (and the galloping gourmet) on tv.

My heart remembers those days, and i smile.

    Now pass the wine.

  7. I liked the book but doubt I'll shell out the $100 to go see it. I know how much food there was in the book and I'm sure the 10pound bag of Rasinettes will cost a fortune. I'll wait for netflix and I'll eat ny own dried up fruit

  8. I saw it last night and did a review on my site today. I have to say I would have loved more Meryl Streep and Jane Lynch. I thought the scenes with the 2 of them were hysterical.

And yes, I was one of the idiots at Borders today to pick up a copy of "Mastering The Art Of French Cooking". A perfect stranger was perusing the different copies on the shelf and we had a 20 minute discussion about what was the difference between the 2 volume set and the single book. The 2 volume set was $20 less. Go figure. Were there more recipes in the 2 volume set? Were the recipes in the single book all in the 2 volume set? Was it because Meryl Streep was on the book jacket? Neither of us could figure it out and we both walked away with copies of the 2 volume set.

  9. I really want to see this movie!

And I think Americans might figure out Bon Appetit about the time they figure out that Voila is not pronouned "Wahlah."

  10. Why don't you have an alternate flat in Paris? (wish I did) Or do you and I missed it, if so, sorry. If not, want to go in together and get one? I love it there.

  11. I usually don't have to be reminded to eat, but thank you for that because I do want to see this movie. The reality is that I'll probably watch it on dvd at a much later date. By then, I'll have forgotten your suggestion, but I'll be at home and will be able to watch it from the comfortable spot in front of my refrigerator. Win/win.

  13. Why, why, why don't people ask your opinion first? The world would be a whole lot better, not to mention funnier.

  15. Good to know about the timing of dinner. Although I probably won't be released from the chains of motherhood long enough to actually go *see* the movie and will end up getting it at Redbox someday. Not that I'm complaining/grouchy/grumpy or anything.

  16. BUENO APPETITO!! I AM CHEF GUIDO!!

Hah ... I took four years of French in high-school and college. Can't remember more than an ort of it. (I did know that T was silent though *winks*)

I still can't wait to see this movie, even if Amy Adams is lacking breath.

    Blessings!

    S,
Okay, I am VERY biased. I lived in Cambridge. Julia's Harvard Commencement Day Lunch was the hottest ticket in town. And we went to a fabulous French dinner after the movie, and had the best time ever!!!!!! But, hello, we had pre-ordered, and were in heaven. Oh, and the restaurant was only like 8 minutes from the movie and the appetizers and wine were waiting for us. Are we spoiled, YES! And hopefully we will continue to be spoiled,
    Aloha,
MJ and all her pals who went to the movie on Saturday and got the senior discount. Big kudos to Lindy my new BFF who was carded. Oh, okay, she bought her ticket from an older clerk. The rest of us just said, "senior, please," and the 14-year-old just accepted the fact that we were older than she and sold us the cheaper tix.
