How Many People Can I Offend With This Post?

As I drove Martha Jane to LAX yesterday she mentioned she had gone to Loehmann's. Martha is almost 6 feet tall, so she has to buy XL, XXL etc. so tops cover her butt and as she puts it, "It doesn't look like I'm wading in flood waters." She was told Loehmann's no longer sold those sizes. So Martha replied: "Enjoy Chapter 11."

And when Rosie O's favorite designer of three years, Eileen Fisher, stopped making XLs as well, saying she didn't want to attract that kind of clientele, Rosie spoke out against her.

I asked Martha why she thought Loehmann's stopped selling plus sizes and she gave me an answer that never occurred to me. They did not want to turn into the kind of store that catered to overweight Blacks and Mexicans. This was a guess of course but one third, 100 million, people in our country are obese, including Caucasians. I'm guessing Loehmann's does not want to turn into Ross, where navigating the isles really should be an Olympic sport.

So we started scanning the streets looking for Fat Offenders and of course only found skinny ones. (I got this picture off Google images.)

I know we're not supposed to use the "Fat" word and this may be part of the problem. Rosie won't allow the word to be used in her home. At Costco, once skinny Asians are no longer skinny. I guess Kimchi got old after you've had a Big Mac. If no one tells you you're fat, maybe you just keep eating. I had a producer tell me at an important meeting that one of my teeth was too crooked for TV.

I was completely mortified and ashamed since no one had ever mentioned it before, even my agent, former agents and managers. AND MY FAMILY WHO WANT ME TO FAIL AND SEND ME TO AMISH COUNTRY.

I got the tooth fixed.

End of chat.

  1. I am going to print that picture and put it in front of the left over Halloween candy. Also I think I lost my appetite... For the rest of the year!

  2. Because Loehmann's is such the bastian (sp) of sophistication that it doesn't want "fat people" to tarnish it's image???? HAHAHAHAHA! Tell that to the big Jewish woman (my mom happens to be one) who struggle to fit their ass in a size Large!

seriously that is one gnarly photo. come to disney- you'll see the 'fat' people outnumber the skinny ones 20 to 1. And they are always holding on to one of those massive turkey legs.

  4. Suzy,
So, I guess if I wanted to look for a career in the film market, I first need to get my fat crooked teeth fixed?

  6. Odd how when one person looks in the mirror, they see something different than another person may.
We've become the fattest country on the planet, not something I'm proud of especially when seeing fat children.

  9. Someone once asked "You know you're fat because you eat too much?"

No way!! Really?? And here I thought it was because aliens were puffing me up with weird experiments while I slept.

I get so mad when people act like I don't KNOW I'm a lard-ass. Like I woke up one day and saw my reflection and was all "Wow, surprise! What the hell? I thought I was skinny!!"

    Grr.

And some fat people piss me off, too. It's not OK to blame McDonald's, Ben and Jerry, or anyone else because YOU can't put down the damn cheeseburger or spoon. Yes, yes, we all have issues...mine drove me to eat myself into a food coma. Whatever. I still made that choice and will deal with the consequences.

Fat isn't an illness, and you don't get to have special consideration because you never met a box of Ding-Dongs you didn't like. Unless it really IS a glandular problem, and let's be honest...most of us Two-Ton Tessies aren't glandular - we're just fat.

Too much caloric intake + too little caloric usage = obese. Happy to clear that up for anyone NOT in the know.

Also? One may be overweight and still healthy. Pisses my doctor off that my BP and cholesterol are just fine when I'm a walking butter pat.

Hmm...think this is a hot-button issue for me??

  10. You know what I don't get... I have an obese friend. She is gorgeous, beautiful hair, skin, eyes etc. She is the dantiest eater. When we lunch whatever I eat she eats less than half as much. She swears she doesn't snack. So what? Is she gaining weight on air? Does she just smell the chocolate cake and gain weight? Yeah she won't admit that she is a binge eater. Honestly does she think she is getting bigger by the minute because she nibbles on a piece of lettuce and declares to the resturant she is full? Who does she think she is fooling?

  11. I never did understand the fat phobia thing. Some of the most beautiful people I know are overweight. It's a health issue, not an appearance issue. Why let the rest of the world define attractive for us? We should be looking at what is within the person, not what size are their jeans.

    S,
I also want to report that I shopped at Marshall's. They had everything for everybody. I not only got two cute tops which covered my tall ass, but incredible cookies (which I only ate one and gave the rest away), and a FABULOUS pineapple small glass dish which I will use for dipping sauce for gyoza. As you know, I've lost about 50 pounds in 2-1/2 years. I still have a ways to go (20-25, and hello, I am tall so it's not that much), but it is difficult. I did it w/Weight Watchers. And the answer seems to be fruit and vegetables. Make sure you buy GOOD F&V.

P.S. Maybe because we get papayas for like 80 cents, it's easier here, I don't know.

  13. I miss Loehmann's. And Ross. Even though I never was a champion shopper. To be a winner, you've really got to have skillz.

  14. WHAT? Loehmanns not carry XL anymore? My XL Jewish family will be seriously disgruntled.

  15. People are not overweight. They are fat. I've had a lot of problems with fat people in my life. They just flat out hate me. I guess because they think I'm judging them?

Glandular problems, slow metabolism. I've heard it all and it's all bullshit. Most people eat out of loneliness or boredom. Yeah, they might be in good health now, but they will die early. Or get diabetes. Do you have any idea how much strain being obese puts on your heart? Your breathing?

And Gladys, alcoholics drink at home, alone. Heroin users do the same. Obesity is an addiction so they don't eat publicly but prefer to eat at home, where no one will see the amount they actually eat.

Joy and I went to Chicago for a show. Our guide was an obese man. We both ate regular lunches while the obese guy said he wasn't hungry and that he'd already eaten. Once they start eating, they can't stop. One friend of mine has to sleep in a lounge chair because he can't get in or out of bed.

My sister eats more food than any one livinf person. She also works out 2 hrs a day and takes lots of walks.

Addiction should be treated with a qualified therapist, not NA, AA, OA and or of those cult meetings.

    S,
Before I went to WW, I was encouraged by a friend to go to OA. I was amazed that one of the members got up and cried because they ate cake. I also heard a person say that they couldn't sleep if bread was in the house. They had to stay up all night making toast. I left, never to return to OA. I felt great empathy for these people, but I think a licensed therapist should also be in the mix if you're going to cry because you ate cake. And yes, the reason I had gained weight was due to some kind of alien abduction. There is no other plausible reason.

  19. Tell us how you really feel, Suz.

You are right about the reasons people eat too much--that and it tastes good.
